My Top 10 favourite Christmas movies
So last night my wife and I watched one of my favourite Christmas movies. I LOVE Christmas/the Christmas season. It’s that time of year where all I want to do is watch Christmas related things and listen to Christmas music. It’s happy, a lot of people are nicer (and jollier), it’s joyful, and as a Christian it’s the time where we reflect on and celebrate the birth of my Lord and Saviour Jesus; it’s just a great time of year. And as I was watching the movie, it got me thinking two things. The first it’s been a while since I’ve done a top 10 list, and the second was “what are my favourite Christmas movies”? And that brings us to this post.
Just a heads up – this list is only movies/specials that have been released solo on a DVD. It’s not a list of TV episodes because then it would be dominated by Doctor Who, the Office, Community, and Power Rangers ‘ Robo Knight before Christmas’. There’s also going to be some movies that others are going to be surprised those movies are missing, but I just don’t care for some of those movies (sorry-not-sorry The Santa Clause fans). So with all that mind let’s get to it…
#10: Home Alone
A classic if you were a late 80s/90s kid, Home Alone is a fun watch. A great score, an engaging kid, hilarious bandits…and featuring the worst family ever. Home Alone is a fun watch, though most of the good stuff is towards the last half hour. That’s the only downside.
#9: Frosty The Snow Man
One of the cartoon classics, there’s not much to this one. It’s a very enjoyable cartoon set to the music. A very fun watch indeed when you’re wanting something nostalgic.
#8: Irving Berlin’s White Christmas
This is a great Christmas movie that my amazing wife loves and has subsequently gotten me into, filled with wonderful music and great performances. Seek this one out on DVD.
#7: Home Alone 2: Lost In New York (/Electic Bugaloo…SERIOUSLY, IT FIT’S AND MAKES EVERY ‘2:’ MOVIE SOUND EVEN BETTER…anyways…)
Before we got the ‘eh’ and unrelated 3rd, and then a TV movie on/off franchise, we had what is, in my opinion, the crown jewel of the series – Home Alone 2. Home Alone 2 is better than the first movie in every way. Look, we’re not here for a heartwarming family story, especially not with the worst family (seriously, who says the stuff they do to Kevin TWICE) ever. No, we’re here to watch the kid go “ahhhhh”, Joe Pesci struggle not to swear, Marv steal the show, and masochistic torturous traps that would kill people in real life – and Home Alone 2 has all of that in spades, and not just at the end of the movie.
On top of ALL of that, you have some great pre-9/11 New York scenes, a hilarious line about turtle doves, Marv’s amazing screams, and the sound of a tool chest falling down the stairs. Home Alone 2 is…it’s just wonderful.
#6: Love Actually
‘Nuff said. (There is one plot line involving movie star sex scene body doubles I’d lift right out and give a heads up about, but the pros far outweigh the cons to this flick.)
#5: A Charlie Brown Christmas
CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE! HAPPYNESS AND CHEER! (set to borderline sad music, so good). A Charlie Brown Christmas is an absolute gem. From great stuff with Linus the theologian sharing the gospel, to the kids being nuts about presents, to Charlie Brown finally having a good moment. It’s great.
#4: The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
I don’t need to explain this one, it’s a classic for a reason.
Plus, that song gets me laughing hysterically every time. It’s just so harsh (“YOU NAUSEATE ME MR GRINCH”) and funny.
#3: Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer
Again, this one is always listed as a classic for a reason. It’s got great music, awesome characters (looking at you, Yukon “Bumbles Bounce” Cornelious), there’s nothing not to love about this.
#2: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
I’ve already documented why I love this movie here, but the cliff notes version is; it has sentimental value as we’d watch a lot as a family while decorating the tree as a kid, it’s also really funny, very wholesome, and if you’ve been a lifelong churchgoer there are a lot of characters/behaviours that you’ll definitely recognize. Absolutely love this one.
And #1: Die Hard
Seriously, what else could it be? I’ll just let the awesome people from Screen Junkies hilariously explain this one.
And there you have it, my (current, cause it could change) top 10 Christmas movies. Did you see yours on here? What’s your top 10 Christmas movie list? Let me know in the comments!
And just cause, I’m also gonna leave you with one of my favourite Christmas songs.
Hope you all enjoyed the post and enjoy the upcoming Christmas season. God bless my friends!
