None of this is fair

The other day I had a conversation with a friend at work. During the conversation he had said one of his gripes with Christianity was that it didn’t seem like God was fair.

God isn’t fair in the sense that we like to think of fairness – that everyone should get what they deserve. However, God is fair in the sense that He is just. And He is unequivocally just. Deuteronomy 32:4 says “The rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is He.” Peter says in Acts 10:34-35 “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to Him.”

In the sense of fairness that we all get what we deserve God is not fair. None of this is. Because God did not have to send his son to die for us. God did not have to give a way for us to spend eternity with Him. God did not need to bless us richly. Provide us with friends. Loving families. Strong churches. Place us in financially secure countries. Give us opportunities for food or clothing. If we were getting what we deserve – what was fair – we would be going to hell. We would deserve hell. Because there is nothing we can do that could deserve Heaven. In our sin we would have rejected the Lord. We would deserve hell.

None of this is fair; but it is pure grace. By God’s grace we Christians are going to heaven – even though we don’t deserve it. By God’s grace we have a chance to share Jesus’ story and opportunity of repentance and salvation with the world that doesn’t deserve it – but God has extended His grace to it.

I pray you will be active and sharing God’s grace this week.

Take care.
