Plug city: Articles, Sermons, Scripture, and Doctor Who!
Hey y’all! Hope you had a wonderful weekend and fathers day! Today’s post is a sharing heavy one, as I’ve gotten the chance to read some excellent articles, listen to some great sermons and podcasts, and get hit with some amazing scripture this past week that I had to share with you wonderful people. Let’s (hip)hop to it:
Geeks Under Grace is a website our friend Matt from Cardboard Koinonia recommended to me awhile ago, and this past weekend I went on a spree – they had a bunch of great articles involving the wonderful show Avatar: The Last Airbender and it’s (lesser) sequel series The Legend of Korra. A really cool way to revisit this crazy interesting world through a Christian lens. The ones I really wanted to share are: How To Love Your Enemy, Avatar Style, Zuko and The Prodigal Son, and The Legend of Korra Finale: Three Reasons It Didn’t Work.
This past week I learned one of my dear friends Hallam Willis (who we did a text-based ‘A Chat With’ back in 2016) has had two articles published recently (and in typical Hal fashion, he didn’t tell anyone) with First Things (Liberalism as a Virtue) and The Gospel Coalition (5 Things You Should Know about Postmodernism) that are well worth a read.
Another great article I came across was from CrossWalk(.com) and was asking Can Christians Learn About God from Geek Culture? And yes, we can! It has some cool reasons why and is definitely worth checking out!
Like I said above, I’ve had the chance over the past week to hear receive some great teaching (one of the main reasons I love the podcast medium), and I wanted to share some of those with you here:
Our friend Dave Lombardo’s (from Upper Room Church Community Vaughn) latest sermon about Conversation that just walloped me that looks at self-centeredness and how we can learn from the apostle Paul in communicating with other. Well worth a listen:
Our friend Hector Miray from Faith and Fandom did at a Chapel Session of Camp Gilead a summer Bible camp (in Lakeland Florida) that had a superhero theme called ‘Unleashed’ that is really solid and you can check out here.
Along with sharing some articles of his, I wanted to share a sermon that Hal Willis preached at New City Baptist called ‘There Is Now Mercy’ (which you can check out here). Hal has preached a number of times over the past couple of years, and if you can I’d recommend checking out more of his stuff.
Also wanted to share to pieces of scripture that really struck me this week – great reminders of what we should do with each other and that there is only one way to Heaven:
and Acts 4:11-12
And finally, since last weeks blog post, I’ve been on a bit of a Doctor Who kick and wanted to post some stuff. The first is this wonderful alternate rendition of the Doomsday theme that was used in the 12th Doctor’s final episode ‘Twice Upon A Time’ during a conversation between his 1st and 12th incarnations:
The second is the 12th Doctor’s regeneration theme – which is notably less melancholic than both (beautifully sad) themes of the 10th and 11th Doctors.
And finally, I wanted to share this youtube channel. So far there are six videos in his series on Doctor Who, which documents the story and behind the scenes stories of each Doctor and their seasons, currently up to the 5th Doctor/Peter Davison Era. If you’re a Doctor Who fan and/or want to learn more about the show and its history, definitely check this out.
Hope you all enjoyed today’s post and that the Lord spoke to you through the articles and sermons. Hope you all have a great day. God bless my friends!
